Planning & Controlling Projects

Overview
Curriculum
  • While it is not required for this course, I highly recommend that you purchase Harold Kerzner's text on project management:
  • Kerzner, H. (2022). Project management: A systems approach to planning, scheduling, and controlling, 13th ed. Hoboken, NJ: Wiley. ISBN-13: 978-1119805373.

This course addresses the fundamental concepts Project Managers need to know to be able to effectively plan and execute a project. Due to its importance and direct relationship to successful project management efforts, project planning will be heavily emphasized. Historically, project managers had to learn the project control function on the job with little guidance from educational institutions, so how to set up the project control is addressed in this course as well.

Topics in this course will include:

  • Project planning and the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS).
  • Project scheduling, estimating and establishing project control.
  • Project status reporting and earned value measurement systems (EVMS).

This course demonstrates the critical planning and decomposition activities necessary to break down complex programs into manageable work chunks comprised of assignable tasks.
