  • While it is not a requirement for this course, I recommend that you get the text by Charles S. Wasson (2016) titled, "Systems Engineering Analysis, Design and Development," 2nd ed., published by John Wiley & Sons, for reference purposes.

Welcome to this course on Systems Engineering and Design. This course covers a lot of information about systems engineering and how it is applied to the design and development processes for projects tasked with the acquisition of complex digital systems. A series of systems engineering processes are applied repetitively, iteratively, and recursively, as we decompose the system one layer of architecture at a time.

To cover these processes, the course is divided into four sections:

(1) Systems Engineering Overview;

(2) Functional Analysis and Systems Architecting;

(3) Requirements Engineering; and

(4) Systems Verification Testing.

The course addresses how to develop a system on a progressive bases and establish a firm configuration baseline through the formal review and evaluation process. As we progress through the series of design reviews, the system definition becomes more refined, and the configuration baseline is established to the next level of detail. Functional (at SDR and/or SRR), Allocated (at PDR), and the Product (at CDR) baselines are established as the system development process evolves. In evolving from one design configuration to the next all changes must be carefully recorded and documented in terms of their possible impact on system requirements.

Formal design reviews provide authentication of these baseline configurations, which are described through a family of specifications, drawings, parts lists, reports, and related documentation, which collectively is referred to as the Technical Data Package (TDP).

The course ends with a discussion on systems verification testing and how such test are executed.
